Willie Nelson

Nacido el 30 de abril de1933 en Fort Worth, Texas, Willie Nelson puede ser considerado entre los artistas de Country más influyentes, si no el que más, de los últimos 25 años del siglo XX. En primer lugar como autor de canciones y a continuación como el intérprete que redefinió las reglas de lo que se llama Country.

Tras llegar a Nashville en 1960, escribió canciones que fueron enormes éxitos para Ray Price (“Night Life”), Faron Young (“Hello Walls”) o Patsy Cline (“Crazy”). Pero cuando la Music City decidió que su estilo, y su inconfundible voz nasal, eran demasiado inusuales y no se acomodaban a los parámetros al uso, Nelson se volvió a Texas, donde se convirtió en un auténtico icono cultural.

A principios de los 70 su audiencia estaba compuesta por una extraña mezcla de rednecks y hippies, con ambos estereotipos atraídos por su actitud relajada y sus cósmicos temas de cowboys. Su álbum Red Headed Stranger le convirtió en uno de los grandes nombres del movimiento outlaw, además de lograr por fin el tan ansiado éxito, convirtiéndose en su primer álbum en llegar al número uno y traducirse en el premio Grammy a la mejor interpretación masculina de Country en 1975.

Estilísticamente Nelson lo ha probado todo entre el Honky Tonk y los grandes standards americanos, incluso el reggae, pero merced a su distintiva aproximación a cualquier canción que se le ponga delante, de alguna manera ha conseguido cohesionarlos en un estilo personal e intransferible.

También ha desarrollado una carrera cinematográfica, con películas como The Electric Horseman y Honeysuckle Rose. En los ochenta fue uno de los fundadores de los conciertos benéficos Farm Aid, en apoyo de los granjeros americanos. Sin embargo una inspección fiscal le dejó prácticamente sin activos, y con la declarada intención de conseguir fondos para pagar al fisco editó Who’ll Buy My Memories, que se convertiría en uno de sus discos más evocadores.

Su conciencia social y su maestría en cualquier forma imaginable de Country le ha convertido en uno de los auténticos gigantes del estilo.
